You know the island. Three glass pendants, a stone slab, and at six o’clock the cutting board is still a cave. That is not the marble. That is kitchen island lighting hanging like jewelry while your own shoulders eat the light. Drop the fixtures toward the work, light the other counters separately, and the board comes back.

This is the same idea as layered lighting: the island is the task layer in the middle of the room. The ceiling can still wash the volume. It should not be the only thing you chop under.

What kitchen island lighting should do

Kitchen island lighting should light the board you chop on. Hang the bottom of the pendant about 30 to 36 inches above the counter, centered on the island, high enough that stools are not a glare trap. Ceiling cans wash the room. Under-cabinet strips still do the other counters.

A U.S. Department of Energy residential guide that reprints IES handbook values puts a prep counter around 50 footcandles — ten times the 5 you need to walk the room. You do not need a meter. You need to see the knife.

Pendants earn that job where there are no wall cabinets to hide a strip: islands, peninsulas, a table that pretends to be both. They can also be the pretty thing. Pretty is not the test.

How high should the lights hang?

Trade guides agree on a band, not a sacred number. Measure from the top of the counter to the lowest point of the fixture, not to the canopy at the ceiling. On a typical 36-inch counter, 30 to 36 inches of air puts the bottom about 66 to 72 inches off the floor.

Go much under 30 and taller people graze it, and anyone on a stool looks straight into the lamp. Go much over 36 and the light thins out and the fixture starts to float, disconnected from the work.

If the island has a breakfast bar, sit in the stool before anyone drills. Push toward the high end of the band so faces are not a silhouette. Heavy, opaque shades often want a little more air. Clear glass and open frames can sit a little lower without blocking the view across the kitchen.

Hold a box or a paper plate at the planned height. Cook under it. The number on the blog is a starting point. Your sightline is the brief.

How many pendants, and how far apart?

Center the row on the island, not on the room. A pendant that is “centered in the kitchen” and a few inches off the stone will look accidental every time you walk in.

Guides wander on the inch-perfect recipe, so treat these as a tape-out, not a code:

  • Leave about 6 to 12 inches from each end of the island to the outer edge of the first and last shade.
  • Start around 24 to 30 inches center to center between pendants. Wide or heavy shades want more air between them so they do not read as one blob.
  • A short island, roughly 4 to 5 feet, often wants one larger fixture or two small ones. Medium, roughly 6 to 8 feet, two medium or three smaller. Longer than that, three pendants or one linear bar.
  • Two larger pendants usually look calmer than three mini ones fighting for the same air.

A linear bar is not a consolation prize. On a long island it lights the span without a row of dots, and it keeps the view open. Shape is a pendant style choice. Height and spacing are how the counter actually works.

Tape the layout on the ceiling. Check it from the stools, from the range, and from the doorway into the living room. If a shade crosses someone’s face or the TV, move the shade, not the sofa.

Do you still need under-cabinet lights?

Yes, if you have wall cabinets. Island pendants do not reach those counters. The usual failure is you, standing at the board: the ceiling light hits your back, the cabinet blocks the rest, and the knife is in a hole.

The DOE guide is blunt about it. Undercabinet lights exist to stop the shadow a person casts on the work. Put the run toward the front lip of the cabinet, not against the backsplash. Light on the tile and dark on the board is the tell that the strip is too far back.

Linear bars or tape in a diffused channel wash evenly. Puck lights make hotspots and scallops. Either still beats asking a central ceiling fixture to do prep.

No new box, rental, or a peninsula with nothing overhead: a plug-in or rechargeable bar under the front edge is the same move we use in a small apartment with no rewiring. It will not replace a hardwired run. It will stop the board from disappearing when you lean in.

Kelvin, CRI, and the dimmer

Pick one color temperature for the whole kitchen and keep every layer in it. ENERGY STAR builder guidance lists kitchens at 2700K, 3000K, or 3500K, with 2700K to 3000K preferred in homes. Open-plan rooms that share a view with the living room usually want the warmer end so the kitchen does not go clinical after dinner. A closed work kitchen can take 3500K. Mixing 2700K cans with 4000K tape in the same glance is how an expensive kitchen looks unfinished.

CRI is the quieter number, and food cares. ENERGY STAR points to CRI 80 or better for homes and the 90s where color matters; their kitchen row is 90. A warm bulb with a low CRI still turns tomatoes gray. It just does it in amber.

Skip a single lumen package. Retailers do not agree, and a bright pendant that only lights the crown of your head still fails. Light on the board, no glare in a seated face, a dimmer so chopping and late tea are not the same scene — that is the test. If the LEDs flicker as they dim, the dimmer and the lamp are mismatched. Check the compatibility list before you blame the fixture.

If the island has a sink, read the fixture label for the location it is listed for. Do not assume a living-room pendant is happy over steam.

The usual mistakes

Hanging the pretty thing first and the work light never. Centering on the room. Mixing color temperatures. Skipping the dimmer. Asking three mini pendants and zero under-cabinet light to cover a galley of counters. All of those are the same error: one fixture, every job.

Tape the plates tonight. Stand at the board. Where is it still dark — under your hands, or nowhere in particular? That is the whole brief.
